Heroes of the East is a 1978 Shaw Brothers film directed by Lau Kar-leung from a script by Ni Kuang. It stands out among kung fu films for treating Japanese martial arts with respect rather than as cartoon villainy, and many fans consider it one of Lau's best.
Gordon Liu stars, with Yuka Mizuno and Yasuaki Kurata, and Lau himself turns up as a drunken boxing master. It opened in Hong Kong in December 1978.
Ho Tao, a Chinese kung fu student, is married off to the daughter of his father's Japanese business partner. She is a martial artist too, and their arguments over whose style is better soon get out of hand. When a misunderstood letter reaches her teachers in Japan, Ho Tao has to face seven Japanese masters in turn, each an expert in a different art, from karate to ninjutsu.
Is it the same film as Shaolin Challenges Ninja? Yes. It is also known as Challenge of the Ninja.
Is it suitable for younger viewers? The BBFC rated a 2021 UK release 12 for moderate violence and sex references.
