Challenge of the Masters is a 1976 Shaw Brothers film directed by Lau Kar-leung, the choreographer-turned-director who brought real southern kung fu lineage to the screen. It tells a coming-of-age story about Wong Fei-hung, the Cantonese folk hero, long before he became a master.
Gordon Liu plays the young Wong, with Chen Kuan-tai as the teacher who shapes him. Ni Kuang wrote the screenplay.
Young Wong Fei-hung is eager to fight, but his father refuses to teach him, and students from a rival school keep beating him. He finally finds a teacher in Lu Ah-tsai, his father's own master, and the training that follows is about patience and restraint as much as technique. When the rival school's thugs start hurting people in town, Wong's lessons are put to the test.
