Five Element Ninjas is a 1982 Shaw Brothers film directed by Chang Cheh, who co-wrote it with Ni Kuang. Late in his career, Chang went all in on spectacle, and this is his most outlandish film: color-coded ninja squads, impossible weapons and very bloody battles.
Ricky Cheng Tien-chi leads, with Lo Meng of the Venom Mob, Lung Tien-hsiang and Michael Chan Wai-man. It is also known as Super Ninjas and Chinese Super Ninjas.
A Chinese martial arts school, outclassed by its rivals, is attacked by ninjas brought in from Japan. Their five squads fight in formations based on gold, wood, water, fire and earth, and almost nobody survives. The lone survivor studies the ninja arts so he can turn their methods against them, and the final act is a series of battles against each element.
Is it suitable for younger viewers? No. The BBFC rated a 2016 UK release 15 for strong violence, and the gore is part of the film's reputation.
Is it the same film as Super Ninjas? Yes. Super Ninjas and Chinese Super Ninjas are common English titles.
For earlier Chang Cheh, try Five Shaolin Masters (1974) DVD. For a very different take on Chinese and Japanese martial arts meeting, see Heroes of the East (1978) DVD.
