Five Shaolin Masters is a 1974 Shaw Brothers film directed by Chang Cheh from a script by Ni Kuang, with action choreography by Lau Kar-leung and Lau Kar-wing. It opened in Hong Kong on Christmas Day 1974 and is also known as 5 Masters of Death.
Its cast is a lineup of Chang Cheh's stars: David Chiang, Ti Lung, Alexander Fu Sheng, Chi Kuan-chun and Meng Fei, with Wang Lung-wei among the villains.
Five young fighters escape as Qing soldiers burn the Shaolin Temple. They split up, set up secret codes to recognize fellow patriots and swear to regroup. Each trains in his own way to face the Qing's best fighters, and they also need to find the traitor who sold out the temple.
Is it the same film as 5 Masters of Death? Yes. That is a common English title.
Is it based on real history? It draws on Shaolin legends about the temple's destruction by Qing forces. It is not meant as history.
