Rising Shaolin: The Protector is a 2021 Chinese martial arts adventure directed by Stanley Tong, the director of Police Story 3: Supercop and Rumble in the Bronx. It premiered online in China in February 2021, and its Chinese title means Shaolin Temple: The Legend of Debao.
Wang Baoqiang stars, with Ni Dahong, Liu Haoran, Ng Man-tat and Xiong Xinxin.
Debao runs a cheerful scam: his friends pose as robbers, he rides in to save the travelers, and then he steers them to the inn he happens to run. His world falls apart when an assassin kills an imperial envoy at the inn and frames him for it. Now a wanted man, Debao turns to a mysterious monk for training, and for a different way of thinking about strength.
Who directed it? Stanley Tong, who also produced.
Is it suitable for younger viewers? We haven't found a published rating. It is an action adventure with plenty of fighting and some comedy.
For another modern Chinese period kung fu film, try Master of the Shadowless Kick: Wong Kei-Ying (2016) DVD. For another 2021 release, see First in the World (2021) DVD.
