99 Cycling Swords, also known as Lung Wei Village, is a 1977 Taiwanese martial arts adventure written and directed by Tyrone Hsu (Hsu Tien-yung). It stars Polly Shang-kuan Ling-feng, one of the great women of 1970s swordplay cinema.
She is backed by Elliot Ngok (Yueh Hua), Lo Lieh and Lung Tien-hsiang, which makes this a strong pick for fans of the era's ensemble casts.
With rebellion brewing in Lung Wei Village, the ruling Manchu authorities order the local magistrate to stamp it out. He brings in four expert fighters to do the job, and the arrival of these hired killers sets the village's resisters against some very skilled opponents. The story moves between intrigue and set-piece battles, with Polly Shang-kuan at the center of the action.
Is 99 Cycling Swords the same film as Lung Wei Village? Yes. Lung Wei Village is the more literal title; 99 Cycling Swords is the English release title. It has also been sold as Raging Kung-Fu.
Who directed it? Tyrone Hsu, who also wrote the screenplay.
