Hapkido is a 1972 Golden Harvest film directed by Huang Feng, produced by Raymond Chow and written by Ho Jen. It stars Angela Mao, one of the great action heroines of the decade, with Carter Wong and Sammo Hung, who also handled the action.
Hapkido grandmaster Ji Han-jae appears, and keen-eyed fans can spot Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao and Corey Yuen early in their careers. It was released in North America as Lady Kung Fu.
Three Chinese students have been training in hapkido in Korea under Japanese occupation. After a clash with Japanese thugs, they return to China and open a school of their own, only to be harassed by the Japanese-run Black Bear school nearby. The pressure builds until fighting is the only answer, and Angela Mao gets plenty of room to show her speed.
Is it the same film as Lady Kung Fu? Yes. Lady Kung Fu is the North American release title.
Is it suitable for younger viewers? The BBFC rated a 2006 UK release 15 for strong violence.
For another leading lady of the era, try Polly Shang-kuan in 99 Cycling Swords (1977) DVD. For more Carter Wong, see Snake in the Eagle Shadow 2 (1978) DVD.
