The Water Margin is a 1972 Shaw Brothers wuxia directed by Chang Cheh with Pao Hsueh-li and Wu Ma, produced by Run Run Shaw. Chang and Ni Kuang wrote the screenplay from one episode of Shi Nai'an's 14th-century novel Water Margin.
David Chiang, Tetsuro Tamba, Ku Feng and Toshio Kurosawa lead, with Ti Lung, Chen Kuan-tai and Lily Ho. It opened in Hong Kong in March 1972 and is also known as Seven Blows of the Dragon.
In 11th-century China, corruption has driven a band of honorable outlaws to Liangshan Marsh, where they live by their own strict code. The film follows how the nobleman Lu Junyi and his loyal servant Yan Qing come to join them, and the outlaws' battle against the fortress of the Zeng family and its fearsome champion.
Do I need to know the novel? No. The film tells a self-contained part of the story.
Is it the same film as Seven Blows of the Dragon? Yes. It is also known as Outlaws of the Marsh.
