About the film

Ten disciples, one dangerous road

10 Brothers of Shaolin is a 1977 Hong Kong and Taiwan co-production from the busiest stretch of the Shaolin cycle, when temple-trained heroes were the hottest ticket in martial arts cinema. Director Ting Chung builds the film around a simple, satisfying hook: ten fighters, each with a specialty, sent out to do one job.

It is a showcase for a deep bench of 1970s regulars, with Don Wong Tao, Chang Yi, Phillip Ko, Bryan Leung and Stephen Tung Wai all in the mix.

The film

The abbot of Shaolin chooses ten freshly graduated students, five monks and five laymen, to escort Master Chu, a guest who has sheltered inside the temple walls while waiting for the right moment to resume his fight against the rulers of the day. Once the group leaves the temple, the road becomes a gauntlet of ambushes, and the brothers have to prove that years of drills hold up against real enemies. The structure gives almost every cast member a moment to shine, which is a big part of the fun.

Before you settle in

Is 10 Brothers of Shaolin known by any other title? Yes. It also circulates as Warriors of the Sacred Temple and The Great Ten Disciples, so check those names if you are matching it against a collection list.

Who directed it? Ting Chung, who worked across Hong Kong and Taiwanese productions in the late 1970s.
