About the film
Jalal Merhi and the medallion
Operation Golden Phoenix is a 1994 action film directed by and starring Jalal Merhi, the martial artist and producer who also starred in Tiger Claws. Loren Avedon and James Hong co-star, with Karen Sheperd and Al Waxman.
It is also known simply as Golden Phoenix.
The film
A kickboxer is hired to protect one half of a valuable medallion. An evil warlord wants it, and so does a rival fighter, and neither cares what it takes to get it. The hunt makes for a treasure-hunt action film with plenty of one-on-one fights. Merhi and Avedon both get time to show their kicking, and James Hong brings his usual veteran presence to the villain's side. Karen Sheperd adds more martial arts muscle. The result is a busy, fight-heavy adventure.
