Hero is a 1997 Shaw Brothers production directed by Corey Yuen, who also co-wrote it with Jeffrey Lau and staged the action. It is a remake of Chang Cheh's Boxer from Shantung (1972) and was produced by Mona Fong.
Takeshi Kaneshiro stars as Ma Wing-jing, with Yuen Biao as his older brother and Valerie Chow, Jessica Hsuan and Yuen Wah in support.
Driven by poverty at the end of the Qing dynasty, Ma Wing-jing and his brother come to Shanghai to make their fortune. Ma saves the life of a powerful gangster, Tam Sei, and is rewarded with a nightclub. A rival gang wants the same territory, the police are on the take, and Ma's rise puts everyone around him in danger.
Is it related to Zhang Yimou's Hero? No. This is a different 1997 film. Its Chinese title is the name of its hero, Ma Wing-jing.
Do I need to see Boxer from Shantung first? No. It retells the same story in its own way.
