About the film

Sam the Seed is back, and so is Hwang Jang-lee

Dance of the Drunk Mantis is a 1979 Hong Kong kung fu comedy directed by Yuen Woo-ping for Seasonal Film Corporation, the company behind Drunken Master. It brings back Simon Yuen Siu-tien as Beggar So, the wine-loving master also known as Sam the Seed, and pits him against Hwang Jang-lee, the kicking villain of the earlier film.

Ng See-yuen produced and co-wrote, and the fights were choreographed by members of the Yuen family, including Corey Yuen and Yuen Shun-yi.

The film

Beggar So comes home to find his wife has adopted a son, Foggy, who is keen to learn but hopeless under his new father's methods. Foggy finds a more patient teacher in an eccentric uncle. Meanwhile a rival called Rubber Legs, who has fused drunken boxing with mantis technique, is hunting for Beggar So, and Foggy may be the one who has to answer the challenge.

Before you settle in

Is it a sequel to Drunken Master? Loosely. Simon Yuen's Beggar So returns and the film is sometimes sold as Drunken Master Part II, but Jackie Chan does not appear and the story stands on its own.

When was it released? It opened in Hong Kong cinemas in June 1979.
