American Shaolin is a 1991 martial arts film from Seasonal Film Corporation, the Hong Kong company behind the No Retreat, No Surrender films. Directed by Lucas Lowe and written and produced by Keith W. Strandberg, it was marketed in some territories as King of the Kickboxers 2.
Reese Madigan stars, with Trent Bushey, Kim Chan and an early role for Daniel Dae Kim.
After a humiliating loss in the ring, a brash young American karate fighter heads to China to study at the Shaolin Temple. Getting through the gate is only the start. The monks expect discipline and humility, neither of which comes naturally to him. It is a training film with a fish-out-of-water twist, and the temple setting gives it a different look from the usual tournament movie.
Is American Shaolin a sequel to King of the Kickboxers? Only in name. It was sold as King of the Kickboxers 2 in some markets because it came from the same production team, but the story stands on its own.
Why do some sources say 1992? The film was completed in 1991, and many international releases followed in 1992.
Is it suitable for younger viewers? The BBFC rated a 1993 UK video release 15. Expect frequent martial arts violence.
Watch King of the Kickboxers (1990) DVD for the earlier Lucas Lowe film it was marketed alongside. For another Seasonal production directed by Lucas Lowe, try No Retreat No Surrender 3 (1990) DVD.
